Transport and movement
Surrey County Council is responsible for Woking’s roads and transport network. It also produces the Local Transport Plan – a long-term strategy for how people move around.
A key aim of the plan is to reduce car use and encourage more walking, cycling and use of public transport.
This shift supports healthier, better connected communities, cleaner air and a greener, more sustainable economy. It also helps tackle climate change and aligns with the Local Plan’s goals.
National policy now follows a ‘vision and validate’ approach, where we start by imagining what we want our transport system to look like in the future (by 2044) and then work backwards to plan how we get there.
This means:
- Prioritising walking, cycling and public transport
- Planning better local neighbourhoods where people can live, work and access services nearby by reducing travel demand and distances
- Using data and analysis to explore different ways of achieving this vision, rather than assuming current trends will continue
- Key investment areas to help decarbonise transport:
- Local Cycling and Walking Plans (LCWIPs)
- Local Street Improvements (LSIs) including traffic-calming, better public spaces and safer routes for walking and wheeling
- Bus service improvements
- Electric vehicle infrastructure
These projects aim to create safer, healthier and more attractive streets with lower speed limits, less air and noise pollution and better travel choices for everyone.
