Tackling climate change

Climate change affects every part of our lives, from the weather we experience to the food we eat. It's important that we all act now to protect the planet for future generations.

In September 2024, the council adopted a new climate change strategy, Woking 2050. This sets out the progress we’ve made since declaring a climate and ecological emergency in July 2019, and what we’ll do next to respond to the climate crisis.

In Woking, the biggest source of carbon emissions is energy use, especially electricity and gas. This makes up nearly 58% of the borough’s carbon footprint.

Government is committed to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The new Local Plan will play an important role in helping to reduce emissions locally through policies and priorities.
